The city carries a notable piece of American history: on March 31, 1880, four carbon arc lamps illuminated the downtown area from atop the county courthouse, making Wabash the first electrically lighted city in the world. That courthouse square remains the center of the city today, surrounded by a mix of historic storefronts, the Eagles Theatre, and the Mark C. Honeywell Civic Center that anchors local life. The city has a population of roughly 10,000 to 12,000 people and has long been rooted in manufacturing and the regional economy of north-central Indiana.
